What is Coaching?
When you hear “life coach”, what do you think?
Not too long ago, I had no idea what a life coach was. It sounded synonymous with snake oil salesman to me.
Only through getting good help for my ADHD did I begin to understand the transformative power of coaching.
A good coach has meaningful conversations with you where you can fully express yourself.
A good coach asks you powerful questions that stimulate you to gain perspective and increase your understanding of yourself and your situation.
A good coach can be a catalyst for real change in your thinking and behavior.

Mechanical advantage for your aspirations
When you need to lift a heavy load, you need mechanical advantage. Maybe you use a pully system to amplify what you can lift with muscle and bone. You use your smarts to pick a tool to help you get it done
Coaching is a tool that you use to get the most out of yourself so that you can move the metaphorical loads in your life. Maybe you want to work on a creative or vocational project. Maybe you want to work at enriching your relationships and the communities that you are a part of. Maybe you want to work at accomplishing more as someone with ADHD. No matter what your aims, you have the power inside you already. A coach, like a pully system, can help you amplify your power to get things done.
Coaching is a Process
Conversation
When you meet with your coach, you have rich conversations about what you want in life and how you might change things to get it. Your coach wants the best for you, and is free from desired outcomes.
Endeavor
Most of the work happens outside of the coaching conversation.
You take the understanding you’ve gained and apply it to your life.
You’ll develop tools and techniques to help you in your journey.
Every step of the way, you bring what you’ve got back to the coaching conversation to shine a light on it and notice subtleties that weren’t apparent on your own.
Understanding
Your coach is there to help you identify who you are and what strengths you bring to the table. Through your coaching conversations, you gain a deeper understanding of yourself.
Love
It might sound cheesy, but the goal of coaching is for you to learn to love your genuine self and to love the life you’re living.
A coach can be an important part of that process, either as a constant relationship over many years, or as a bolstering force for a few months at a time here and there.
